Is Spying on Teens Justified?

Dear Jean:
I hope to know should parent spy on their teen? Thank you!
Jean responds:
Hi,
Thanks for visiting at www.parentingadolescents.com and for
sending in a question.
I do not believe that parents should ever spy on their teens
or pre-teens! I believe that young people have a right to
their privacy, just as adults do. I also believe there is
no need for spying: serious trouble will show itself in any
number of ways. If you are concerned about whether your teen
or pre-teen may be in serious trouble, I would suggest that
you read our "About Counseling" and that you talk
to your teen or pre-teen about your concerns. You may also
find it useful to read some of the Q&A's archived at the
web site on the topics of privacy and any other issues you
may have a concern about (drugs, sex, alcohol, etc.).
Thanks again for your inquiry.
Jean.
